Marine Gardens Enlarged
Have you ever looked at a postcard and wondered what was going on when the photographer snapped it?  For me, this is one of those.

It is a gathering of people in the Marine Gardens, Folkestone, Kent, in the year 1909.  Not unusual to see a crowd there at that time, as it was a place for tourists with the beach over to the left, a bandstand to listen to, and kiosks and things of interest over near Marine Parade on the right.  But what I am curious about is what is going on nearest to the camera.  There is one woman holding the handle of the pram, another leaning over it, and is that a child standing between the two?  Another of the women near the pram is glaring at the schoolgirls behind her, one of which standing on the grass has her hand to her mouth, as if trying to stifle a giggle.  The two women in front of the pram are looking on as if they have seen something disgusting, and it has also drawn the attention of the woman sitting on the bench.  The lad on the left of the pram wearing the large hat is also craning his neck not wanting to miss the entertainment.

I would dearly love to know what was going on, wouldn't you?
