Our guest this time is Steve Kinsey - hello Steve, thank you for agreeing to talk to us. Tell me, how long have you been appearing on our screens in Coronation Street?
I started doing Background work back in 1989 ...so this year I celebrate twenty five years self – employed as a Singer/ Musician / Entertainer. Initially I was doing my Extra work through an Agency but for the past ten years or so I’ve worked directly on just Corrie.
You mention being a Singer/Musician/Entertainer, and we can certainly hear you are, I believe this one is called 'The Weight of the World'. Where do you get your material?
I write most of it myself. However, I also belong to a band called 'The Corollas' with my son, and we sing mainly covers. I’ve been in this Band for the past four and a half years and we play a couple of gigs each week. We cover everything from The Beatles and The Stones through to The Arctic Monkeys and The Kings of Leon. I work solo as a Guitar / Vocal / Entertainer but in the Band I sing about five or six songs. The Lead Vocal and Rhythm Guitarist is my eldest son Dale. We are available for weddings/ parties etc.
I found a lot of your solo material on this site: SYM.com so if anyone would like to hear more, they can just pop over there. Do I take it that either you alone, or the whole band are available for gigs?
Absolutely, I also have an acoustic band called 'Stevie Wonders', thus named because we are all called Steve! You can see us play on You Tube, on one of the Disability Awareness Days . To book us in the NW of England, please contact me HERE Now, we would love to be booked for Canada too, but it would have to be a tour - or at least several gigs! Ha ha!
Back to your Extra work, when you were with an agency, which shows were you on?
Quite a variety. I was the regular postman in the first few series of 'Heartbeat'. A Court Reporter in Peter Kay's 'Phoenix Nights', when he had to go to court. Also in 'A Touch of Frost', 'Prime Suspect', 'EastEnders', I was also on the Pleasure Beach at Blackpool in one episode of 'Rab C. Nesbitt'. I was a regular in 'Brookside' from 1990 to 2000, and also 'Emmerdale'. I have also been in a couple of films, 'Ali G Inda House' and 'Let Him Have It'.
Now, let's get personal. Where were you born?
I was born in St. Helens, Lancashire in 1962 . The eldest of five boys. I now live in a town called Newton-le-Willows / Merseyside.
Are you married?
Yes, I have been married to my very lovely wife Jayne for the last thirty three years! We have two lads, Dale and Dean, and a daughter Lyndsey. I even have a three year old Grandson called Harrison!
Now I know Dale is musically inclined, but are any of your children leaning towards the acting profession?
Well, all my children have appeared on Corrie...
Dale and I were Father + Son robbers on “HEARTBEAT” in an episode called “The Holiday is over “
Dean was in an episode “Hetty Wainthrop investigates” as a young lad with Anne Reid.
What was your first job after leaving school?
I was a painter/decorator, a useful profession, but not really what I wanted to do with my life.
No, it seems your first love is music. Are you hoping to hit the big time with it one day?
At the age I am now (mid 20’s !! ) I would love to find success as a song writer and travel the world performing. Which, along with many other colleagues, is something we hope to do forever.
Mid 20's? With children the age they look, plus being married thirty three years, that's a pretty neat trick Steve! Ha ha! Seriously though, it's certainly not too late to achieve your dream, and hope you do. Who would you most like to meet on those world travels?
My TOP three star meetings would be .....1. Sir Paul McCartney 2. George Martin 3. Paul Carrack
Well, I am certainly with you on your No. 1 - but probably for a vastly different reason! :-)
Getting back to Coronation Street. Has anything memorable or funny happened to you on set?
I remember doing the LIVE Corrie for the 40th anniversary, and Noddy Holder, the lead Singer of the Band SLADE was a special guest. Also during the day, Prince Charles visited the set.
I then said to the special guest, ”Fancy seeing Big Ears and Noddy all on the same day! “. He went on to repeat my line the next day in an interview elsewhere!
Ha ha! Probably just as well he didn't credit you with the statement - you might be in the tower now! :-)
Thank you for leaving us with a smile Steve, we wish you all the best wherever your career takes you, and look forward to spotting you in the background of our favourite show.
Now, let's take a peek at your gallery...
